Black Ash baskets are made by local men and woman – Virick Francis, James Simon and Patricia Simon. Baskets have been around for many years. Using Black Ashe, they weave traditional basketry and finish them with a touch of sweet grass. In days gone by, the Mi’kmaw of Eskasoni crafted as many basket as they could, selling them to families all over Cape Breton Island. The baskets were also used for traditional hunting and fishing, and for picking medicines and berries.
